Lhasaero was forced to resign from his police post after being attacked by a criminal

Lazarillo de Tormes

Lázaro’s brief service as a constable ends when criminals attack him and his employer with stones and clubs. The constable is badly beaten, while Lázaro escapes capture; deciding that the occupation is dangerous, Lázaro leaves it and resumes his search for a safer way to earn a living.

Appointment and Risk

After dismissing the chaplain, Lázaro takes a post as a constable. It is a short-lived attempt to establish himself in work that might provide some security. The danger of the office becomes immediate one night, when criminals assault both men with stones and clubs.

The Attack and Departure

The attack divides their fates: Lázaro’s employer stands his ground and is badly injured, while Lázaro is not caught. The contrast makes the danger more than an abstract concern. Lázaro leaves the job soon afterward, treating the assault as sufficient reason not to continue in a profession that exposes him to violent reprisals.

Consequences for Lázaro’s Career

The departure does not end Lázaro’s search for stability. He reflects on finding a position that will let him live quietly and earn something for his old age, and later obtains royal employment with help from friends and people of rank. His duties as a town crier include announcing wines for sale, auctions, and lost property, as well as accompanying those pursued by justice and publicly proclaiming their crimes. The episode thus marks a practical change of direction: after encountering the physical risks of enforcement, Lázaro turns toward a different official livelihood.
